Does jailbreaking a device take up a lot of space. How much does it take up?

The jailbreak itself will only use a tiny amount of disk space. Cydia is slightly larger - version 1.1.8 is almost 1 MB.

One thing to note, however, is that some system files will be moved off of the system partition of the disk and on to the main partition (where your apps, data, etc are saved). This includes the stock iOS apps, jailbreak apps, ringtones and wallpapers. Quick calculation from my device (iPad running iOS 5.1.1) shows that those folders together are 196 MB. (Note that I have themes that install their own wallpapers to the system's wallpaper folder and I also have a number of packages from Cydia that include apps, so this size will differ for you.)

It takes up at least 1.5 - 6 GB, depending on how detailed you get.
