Sorry to hear you are having some troubles with your iPhone, I know how frustrating that can be.

Sounds like you may have a corrupted baseband and iOS version combination. Try downgrading your baseband to 05.13.04 using redsn0w. This should allow your device to read your SIM card once again. As long as you are using the original carrier (or if your device is factory unlocked) it should activate via iTunes. If you require an unlock you can jailbreak using redsn0w and unlock with ultrasn0w from Cydia on iOS 5.1.1 with baseband 05.13.04. If you have not activated with the original carrier sim first, and do not have one available to you, fix your hacktivation issues prior to unlocking using SAM installed from

The iPad baseband downgrade is the first thing you should have done, the steps should be done in the order prescribed above. SAM may not even be necessary per the instructions above.

Try the downgrade process with redsn0w again, sometimes it takes multiple attempts before it will work.

The device having a new bootrom will not affect the baseband downgrade; the only reason not to downgrade (does not apply in your case) would be if the device was produced after mid-year 2011 (serial number starting with XX134 or higher).
