How to fix some mysterious problems.

I have an iphone 3g, which a friend of mine unlocked for me awhile ago. Stupidly I hit restore in itunes and the phone got stuck in recovery mode. This has now been fixed using red snow, and the phone now turns on again, but won't work as a phone... I have used red snow to install cydia and to install the ipad baseband. I think I am now supposed to install the custom firmware but I can't seem to get this to work... when I tried it told me that the USB connection failed. I searched this problem and tried using a previous version of redsnow, but then it wouldn't recognise the custom firmware, only the standard firmware.

I have changed the settings on the phone to UK, and tried to restore netwowkr settings. No success. The phone currently says it is version 4.2.1 (8C148) , MODEL MB489B , MODEM FIRMWARE : 05.15.04, Network simpy says unavailable.

How do I get it to work as a phone again?!
