How to fix some mysterious problems.

Hello my friend recently got his iphone 3gs unlocked by a guy in a shop.

He tried to update to 6.01 today and the phone wouldnt activate on iTunes or on wifi.

After some searching on google we found out that the guy who unlocked it must have used the ipad baseband to unlock it and thats why it wont activate now after updating.

is there anything that can be done to activate it now on this new firmware and still keep the unlock or are we screwed?

Thank you.

Edit: the baseband is 06.15.00 if that helps.

Assuming you have the iPad baseband and were unlocked with Ultrasn0w:

Get redsn0w

Download the iOS 6.0 ipsw (not 6.0.1) if you don't already have it

Connect the iPhone to USB
Open redsn0w (run as administrator if using Windows)
Click Extras -> Select ipsw
Choose the 6.0 (not 6.0.1) ipsw
Click Back
Click Jailbreak
Follow the DFU instructions
Select "Install iPad baseband" and "Install cydia"
When that completes, close redsn0w

Open redsn0w (run as administrator if using Windows)
Click Extras -> Select ipsw
Choose the 6.0 (not 6.0.1) ipsw
Click Back
Click Jailbreak
Follow the DFU instructions
Select ONLY "Downgrade from iPad baseband"
When that completes, close redsn0w

Open redsn0w (run as administrator if using Windows)
Click Extras -> Select ipsw
Choose the 6.0 (not 6.0.1) ipsw
Click Back
Click Just boot
Place iPhone in DFU
Close redsn0w when it completes

Open cydia and let it complete loading
Tap Manage -> Sources -> Edit -> Add
Add http://repo.iparelhos.com
Tap search, find and install ultrasn0w and ultrasn0w fixer for iOS 6
Reboot iPhone (power off/on if it doesn't reboot automatically)

Open redsn0w (run as administrator if using Windows)
Click Extras -> Select ipsw
Choose the 6.0 (not 6.0.1) ipsw
Click Back
Click Just boot
Place iPhone in DFU
Close redsn0w when it completes

Yes, that's the iPad baseband, so you're safe to re-flash it. I wrote this answer weeks ago for someone else, all I did tonight was copy/paste it here. :P

That's the baseband it should have. If you have full signal, it should work, assuming the sim has service. Do you have another sim you can try?

My friend failed to tell me that the sim card that was in the phone was only for texts and data thats why it was not receiving calls.

It receives texts fine so it does actually work.

You are the man. thats so much for the help.
