How to fix some mysterious problems.

An upcoming trip abroad, compelled me to edit my iPhone's CommCenter in hopes to unlock the phone and use another SIM card. The process seemed straight-forward, yet did not succeed and left my iPhone 4S in a boot loop (most likely bricked). I must have encountered a misstep in the guide. I placed my iPhone in Recovery mode, iTunes asked to restore the iPhone with updated iOS software. The restore would mean going from 5.1.1 to 6.x, which I strongly want to avoid for obvious reasons.

Googling and searching the web has given me loads of information. I am absorbing the information as best as possible, yet the last 24 hours have been a blur and time is running out before the trip.

Below is a short list of my troubleshooting efforts.

Downloaded the official firmwares from 5.0 to 5.1.1. Tried iTunes option+[Restore] without success. TinyUmbrella server was running. iTunes returned the following error.

The iPhone "iPhone" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (11)

Still unsure if Tiny Umbrella fetched valid SHSH along with the ApTicket. TinyUmbrella did save SHSH for my ECID under .shsh (in my user folder)

Edited the host file and commented out to no avail (a recommendation to get around the iTunes error 11)

Redsn0w is not able to connect to my device and restore the IPSW.

Please confirm that downgrading from 6.0 to 5.x is not possible on iPhone 4S with redsn0w_mac_0.9.15b3; even with the SHSH blob.

TinyUmbrella - Pressing [Exit Recovery] crashes TinyUmbrella

The iTunes error (11) refers to a mismatch of Baseline.

I am curious if the following would helps

  • Access the CommCenter file in a Ramdisk mode (How?)
  • Replace the CommCenter with backup.
  • Stitch the IPSW with my SHSH blob (How?)
  • Create a custom IPSW (How?)

Any ideas on the next avenues to restore my device would be welcomed. My phone had been prepped for this trip (configured tweaks, gps, trip itinerary, locations for the gps).

Thanks everybody coming across my post.

FYI you can't use custom ramdisks without a bootrom exploit, which you don't have on a 4S. Same for custom firmware or stitched firmware. Also, the TinyUmbrella server doesn't work past iOS 4, the method changed with the introduction of iOS 5. You cannot downgrade a 4S from iOS 6 to anything, blobs or not.

You thought you'd independently discovered an unlock that the dev teams missed?

The good news is that you've apparently achieved the impossible: bricking an iPhone 4S using only software.

The bad news is that you've apparently achieved the impossible: bricking an iPhone 4S using only software.

I'd take it to Apple and see if they can restore it. At this point you don't have many options.

EDIT: Try the restore in DFU mode, it's worth a shot.

Sounds like they are going to be stuck doing "DFU>restore to ios 6". Why people mess with comcenter, plists, etc is beyond me. if you dont know what you are doing, DONT DO IT

Want to know the real kicker? Coulda called sprint, asked for the unlock (they unlock the sim for outside the usa if you arent behind on billing or been behind 5 of the past 6 months) and then been unlocked abroad without messing up your phone!
