What system are you on, Mac or PC?

I'm on Mac, but I have access to both.

There is no way to read the baseband version when in recovery mode.

Your best way is to restore using a custom firmware (use Pwnage Tool for Mac or Sn0wbreeze for Windows to creat one), the custom firmware prevents changes to the baseband.

We may be able to help you better if we know the other specifics of your case.

Actually, this is all I wanted to know- I'm sending my iPhone in to Apple in recovery mode as I used the iPad baseband for unlocking purposes because I need a hardware repair on my wifi (the board needs reflowing at the very least). I obviously can't send it in jailbroken, so this was my next best option since I can't downgrade the bb.

no you cant because when you are in recovery mode, only the connect to itunes logo shows up.

I am fully aware of that- I was wondering if there are any applications that can read the baseband from the computer when the phone is in this state.
