Which phone do you have? If you have an iPhone 4, you can preserve the baseband by following the instructions given by @notcom (author of TinyUmbrella) here:

http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/p/prevent-iphone4-baseband-update.html

If you have an iPhone 3G, you can preserve your baseband while updating to 4.2.1 by restoring using the custom .ipsw from this thread.

If you have an iPhone 3GS, please wait! There is currently no way to preserve the 3GS baseband while updating to 4.2.1.

There is a program called TinyUmbrella that will help with this. The caveat is that you need to have your SHSH blobs saved for 4.1. Unless you have previously done this through Cydia or TinyUmbrella, I don't believe upgrading while preserving the baseband is possible yet - at least not without relying on a tethered jailbreak (i.e., every time you reboot, or the phone loses power, you need to reapply the JB in order to get your phone running.).

Actually, as long as the 4.2.1 SHSH blobs are still being saved, TinyUmbrella will preserve the baseband for the iPhone 4.

Right - my mistake - you only need 4.1 blobs saved if you want to downgrade back to 4.1 in the future. Thanks for the correction.
