How to fix some mysterious problems.

Dear all, I have a 3GS running 4.2.1, I'm running Windows XP SP3 I've restored the unit. I've also cheacked fallowing things:

  1. Have an active internet connection
  2. Have iTunes installed (but not open)
  3. Have any firewall turned off.

I've used RC5 and the phone gets jailbroken and boot the first time. When the device reboot and start up there it is still on Itune screen. I've tried to put in a SIM and connect to Itune, but with out luck.

I've done the process several times with same result. Also tried an other XP computer.

Any one got an idea?

Are you on a "connect to iTunes" screen with no text?

Or are you on the "Emergency Calls Only" screen?

Emergency calls only screen. But when starting the GP logo changes with apple logo.

Ah, well, the "Emergency Calls Only" is different. Was your phone previously unlocked? (i.e. were you using a non-standard carrier, such as T-Mobile in the US?)

At least I think i was only the Emergency call screen all the times. But i could also have been Connect to itunes once or twice. I've tried many times. Is it easy to fix is it is the "connect to iTunes" screen?

Other wise. The phone is from the US and was both jailbrooken and unlooked. Then a "friend" punched the Upgrade button. So it went from 4.1 to 4.2.1 And now i can't jailbreak it.

You could run redsn0w and hit Install Cydia. This will hacktivate it and kick it back to normal mode, but that might give trouble with push notifications (at which point you should check out SAM)

@mdelaossa is right, if you want to bypass the emergency call screen you can use redsn0w to hacktivate, but if you're at 4.2.1 on a 3GS at this point, you're unfortunately no longer unlocked, so your SIM card still won't work (if it's not AT&T).

So, the phone is not a phone at the moment, it's an expensvie Ipod touch. Even if i get to jailbraek it, there will still be problems with unlocking it. What should I have done then? Or is it "dead" as soon you upgrade to 4.2.1?

Well, in the past you could use either TinyUmbrella ( or custom firmwares, such as those built with PwnageTool or Sn0wBreeze to avoid updating the baseband. At the time of writing, none of these methods are available for a 3GS, however. iPhone 4's can be updated using TinyUmbrella, and the iPhone 3G can be updated by using a custom firmware from PwnageTool 4.1.2 or higher. PwnageTool should support the iPhone 3GS soon for 4.2.1, but I'm afraid it's a moot point for you, sorry. =(

Ah... if you upgraded your 3GS to 4.2.1 at this point, you have had your baseband (aka "modem firmware") upgraded to 05.15.04 and you have lost your unlock.

You now have two choices:

  1. Wait for an unlock for 05.15.04 (no ETA is known at this point, although it may becoming soon after the release of iOS 4.3)
  2. Update your phone's baseband to 06.15.00, firmware which has been designed for the iPad, but which is usable on the 3G and 3GS and is unlockable.

WARNING!!! There are currently risks to updating to the 06.15.00 baseband:

  1. There currently is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
  2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
  3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).
  4. Some users have reported losing their GPS functionality, and others have reported issues with their bluetooth.

If you really need your phone unlocked and okay with taking the above risks, you can follow one of the guides below:
