How to fix some mysterious problems.

I got an Iphone 3g as a hand me down from a cousin. Since its from another country, it does not accept any of the sim cards here. I've followed the redsn0w/ultrasn0w method for 4.2.1 (He had updated it to the same) but everytime I try it, redsn0w crashes. Which version of redsn0w would you recommend? Also, can I access Cydia without any sim card?

Redsn0w 0.9.14b2 is what you want, get it here.

If you have no sim, or a sim that can't be used where you are, redsn0w will automatically hactivate it during the jailbreak process, bypassing the activation screen.

Yes, you can use cydia without a sim, if you have WiFi available.

Hi, everything worked for my iphone, but then on the start up screen it said:

"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. This iPhone is not currently setup to work with carrier you're attempting to use. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked.

I know i followed all the jailbreaking steps usings Redsn0w 0.9.14b2 with IOS 4.2.1. Do I really need to use an official SIM card? I have no way of getting one (I live in China) and I wasn't able to get past the lock screen. Help??
