Hello, I am new to unlocking, but fairly familiar with jailbreaking. I just got a 3G 8GB iphone and i need to jailbreak and unlock it but its stuck at the emergency call screen. Can someone please help me step by step to see what im doing wrong?

The issue you're experiencing is that unless you have "hacktivated," a SIM-locked phone will require you to activate it using the default carrier SIM card. You can either activate normally by placing a default SIM card in the device and connecting to iPhones, or you can use PwnageTool 4.1.3 or redsn0w 0.9.6 or later to hacktivate your iPhone 3G on 4.2.1:

You should know that if you've updated to 4.2.1 without using a custom firmware bundle from PwnageTool, then you have updated your baseband to 05.15.04 which is not unlockable for the time being.

If this is the case, then you will need to update your baseband to 06.15.00 to unlock, but this has known to cause problems with GPS and Bluetooth, and provides no downgrade method.
