How to fix some mysterious problems.

Hey, there! Got a jailbroken 3gs from ebay, seemed fine. My sister got att to send factory unlock to phone, so I restored the phone before connecting so I could get all the jailbreak stuff off. Since then, it won't recognize that there is a SIM installed. Even got an ATT go phone card to try, no go... Couldn't get past restore screen.

So, I re-jailbroke with redsnow, and am now just using like an iPod. :( Even took it to Apple, they suggested I ask on here! LOL!

Phone info: 3GS version: 5.1.1 (9B206) Model: MB717LL Serial: 889252FS3NR Firmware: 06.15.00

Any advice? THANKS!

sorry, i'm new here. I think i answered you the wrong way!

yes, it's an activated ATT card, but it doesn't have minutes. I've tried my tmobile card, but it doesn't work either.

Boy that looks familiar... oh ya! i gave those steps about 15 hours ago, nice repeat of my answer

You need to use redsn0w to reflash the baseband since you tried to restore stock. Never restore stock with 6.15.00

i must be missing something, I'm not seeing how to do this... sorry... :/

(03 Jun '12, 22:06) mhamilton6530 mhamilton6530's gravatar image

redsn0w>extras>select ipsw>choose stock 3gs 5.1.1 ipsw>answer NO when it asks yes or no since you are old bootrom>back>jailbreak>uncheck all boxes except ipad baseband>dfu>let redsn0w do its thing>when phone reboots you will be able to get thru activation

(03 Jun '12, 22:22) theiphoneguy ♦ theiphoneguy's gravatar image

Thanks for your help, but still no...

It DOES say no service now instead of no sim, and instead of saying "no sim" in the "about" section, it actually has numbers.

Any thoughts?

(03 Jun '12, 23:37) mhamilton6530 mhamilton6530's gravatar image

if you are using a sim that is NOT att you have to turn off the 3g in settings>general>network. If you dont, it's looking for (insert carrier name here) on ATT's 3G frequency (like trying to listen to an AM station with a FM radio)

(04 Jun '12, 00:17) theiphoneguy ♦ theiphoneguy's gravatar image

Numbers? Are they negative numbers in place of the signal bars, like -85? That would be "Field Test" mode, which is a hidden feature you can enable and disable.

(04 Jun '12, 00:27) britta britta's gravatar image

Nah they mean in about, iccid has numbers when before it wouldnt read the sim (stock restore after 6.15.00)

(04 Jun '12, 00:45) theiphoneguy ♦ theiphoneguy's gravatar image

Ok! I turned off 3G. Still not getting service, but DEFINITELY seeing the SIM, because I got the message "no sim" when I switched them a second ago. I have an att go phone sim. It's activated, but we didn't put any minutes on it till I figured out everything. So I just put in my tmobile and did as you said. Just says no service. But now I'm not seeing the cydia app, so maybe I need to jailbreak again?

My sister had it unlocked thru AT&T, but it's never gotten the "notice", I figured because of the SIM issue. I don't know. It worked on my nephews phone. I will see if they can resend the signal tomorrow, but if they won't, do I need to do anything else at this point?

And THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! You have been more help than ANYone I have talked to so far!! :)

(04 Jun '12, 02:31) mhamilton6530 mhamilton6530's gravatar image

its not a resend of the signal when att unlocks it. After restoring in itunes you would see "congratulations your iphone is unlocked" because itunes checks the imei against apples carrier lock database. I would make a custom 5.1.1 next and restore with that (snowbreeze custom) and when its done, if you dont see "congrats its unlocked" att/apple hasnt completed the request yet.

(04 Jun '12, 02:41) theiphoneguy ♦ theiphoneguy's gravatar image

Thanks, but I have more questions!! :) I'm actually pretty techno-literate, but this is the first time I've ever done this and I'm a "follow the directions" girl. LOL!

snowbreeze is windows, right? I have a macbook.

Right now, cydia is not on my phone, this may be a stupid question, but is my phone running on a jailbreak just without cydia, or is it just running from the software? I can use it like an iPod now.

And when you say, custom 5.1.1, do you have a link to directions to do that?

I really appreciate your help!!

(04 Jun '12, 10:18) mhamilton6530 mhamilton6530's gravatar image

Ah on a mac, use redsn0w 11b4 and choose extras>custom ipsw>point it to stock 5.1.1>answer NO when it asks yes/no>then pwn dfu>then restore the custom NO_BB_5.1.1 ipsw. IF after restore you see congratulations your phone is unlocked, then no need for cydia for it to function, but would want cydia if you want to be jailbroken

(04 Jun '12, 13:35) theiphoneguy ♦ theiphoneguy's gravatar image

you, sir, are AWESOME!!!!!! :)

Thank you, thank you!!!!!!!

(oh, in case you couldn't tell, that worked!) :)

Anytime :)

(04 Jun '12, 19:17) theiphoneguy ♦ theiphoneguy's gravatar image

so while i have you here, is there anything I need to know? Like updating, etc? If I'm understanding all this correctly, I should never update through iTunes, right? And if I ever DO need to update, I need to do it through redsnow with a custom ipsw?

Seriously, thank you, again!

(04 Jun '12, 22:30) mhamilton6530 mhamilton6530's gravatar image

yep just always with a redsn0w or pwnage custom (both mac useable) or sn0wbreeze (win only), then it wont mess with the baseband, needing to reflash like you had to.

Everything else, use itunes as normal, syncing, backing up, etc

(04 Jun '12, 22:36) theiphoneguy ♦ theiphoneguy's gravatar image

Great! Thanks again :)

Sounds like you got the issue sorted already but a point of reference for future readers, a go phone sim may not work as many if not most go phone sims are restricted to the phone with which it was sold, this is an AT&T policy. You can however sign up for go phone service on a standard AT&T sim card which will allow use in any device including the iPhone.

(04 Jun '12, 23:16) JuergenWest ♦ JuergenWest's gravatar image

JuergenWest, yes, I went to AT&T, and they told me the same! They gave me an activated SIM with no minutes installed just to see if they could get it to activate, which it couldn't. They then told me that I couldn't get Data with a GoPhone SIM for iPhone, which I didn't really understand, but since I got it all worked out here with my tmobile, I didn't need the SIM anymore.

AND another point for future reference, there's lots of people that have issues with no 3G service when you use tmobile, and you have to use the edge network. I just have to say that the iPhone is such a more "date-efficient" phone, that this phone works faster on EDGE than my MyTouch Slide was on 3G... :)

Hey, theiphoneguy! I have a new question! After I got every thing on, I noticed that every so often, the phone would drop service, search for a second then come back on. I figured, no biggie. But now, it's doing it several times a day. It only lasts a second or two, but still, VERY annoying!! Any suggestions?

hey, nope, not me! Hamilton is my married name. :)

I felt the same about my phone, but this post fixed it ALL!! It works great! Now, if they just still made some cool phone cases for the 3gs, I would be SET! LOL!

Hello Tom. i'm gonna explain you what i do , i hope that you can help me.

I had my iPhone 3gs jailbroken and working great with baseband 06.15.00 and os 4.1....yesterday i stupidly decide to upgrade it to 5.1.1, i used pnawge tool 5.1.1 and the ispw 5.1.1, until there everything was ok, with the exception that i have NO SERVICE, them i tried using ultrasn0w, and SAM, Ultrasn0w fixer 5.1.1. but nothing happens and i notice that the iPhone don't recognize the sim card, don't recognize the carrier neither.... i don't know what yo do, please if you need any additional information let me know....
